Virginia state symbols collage Kitchen Towel featuring the cardinal

Quick questions

What does the phrase 'The Old Dominion State' actually mean on this towel?

The phrase refers to Virginia's historical title granted by King Charles II in 1660 because the colony remained loyal to the crown during the English Civil War. While it appears prominently on the green banner, it is a formal nickname rather than a description of current governance. You see it here to honor the deep colonial roots that define the state's identity alongside the modern wildlife illustrations.

Which specific animals are featured as official symbols on this print?

The design includes the Northern Cardinal as the state bird, shown in vibrant red plumage, and the Brook Trout representing the state fish with detailed scales. A Tiger Swallowtail butterfly is also depicted, which holds the distinction of being the official state insect. These three creatures represent the diverse ecosystems found throughout the Commonwealth, appearing alongside the state flower and historic architecture.

How does this towel differ from generic state-themed kitchen linens?

Unlike simple flag prints, this design uses a collage format that mixes biological specimens with cultural artifacts like the sailing ship and Monticello. The inclusion of the "Virginia Dairy" label on the milk bottle adds a specific agricultural detail not found on standard souvenirs. This attention to accurate iconography makes it a more educational piece for history buffs compared to generic patriotic decor.
